Whether you’re exploring bogs, investigating a fjord or pillaging an old palace, where you are at any given moment will dramatically alter the course of your adventure. But here’s the twist - no two gameplay experiences are alike. It's up to you to decide how to deal with them - fight together against evil, invite them into your party or simply ignore them.Īshen is faithful to the "souls" genre of stamina-based combat, introducing players to a punishing yet satisfyingly vast world. The open world is really nice with small caves and other side locations to explore.Ashen is an open world co-op action RPG about a wanderer in search of a place to call home.Īs you adventure through Ashen, you'll occasionally encounter other players in a massive open world, akin to the passive multiplayer of Journey. There's a large amount of weapons to find with unique attack animations for them all and it's not just a choice of using whichever weapon has the biggest damage number, but instead using and learning attack patterns to find your preferred weapon. My only complaints are lack of enemy variety compared to the brand name souls titles and a really large difficulty spike about halfway through (if you're stuck in one particular dungeon you can google to find the secret route that entails jumping off the side of certain ledges to make it to the bottom without dying a million times). The art style is a really beautiful minimalist style (looks sort of like Absolver or Sifu if you've played those). I've since gone back and played through almost every Fromsoft soulsborne title.Īshen gives you a companion at all times and the ability to play co-op. This was the first soulslike game I completed and the first time the formula finally clicked for me. Great game! I played through when it was on gamepass and really enjoyed my time.
